A Namur mural in Lafayette: a symbol of mutual friendship

At the initiative of the Mayor-President of Lafayette , Ms Monique Blanco-Boulet, a mural dedicated to Namur will soon be installed in Lafayette as part of the redevelopment of a heavily used highway.
Created by Milan Cambier, illustrator from Namur, the painting will be printed on a stretched banner and will enhance the public space of the Louisiana city, offering a vibrant and welcoming portrayal of Namur.
The mural was conceived as a reciprocal gesture to the mural dedicated to Lafayette and unveiled in 2023 in Namur.

L'oeuvre a été présentée par la Bourgmestre ff de Namur, Madame Charlotte Bazelaire, à la Maire de Lafayette, Madame Monique Blanco-Boulet, en octobre 2025 à Lafayette.

Historical and academic links

The work highlights the historical foundations of the twinning, including the role played by Belgian teachers sent to Lafayette in the 1970s, as well as the importance of academic exchanges that remain today with the University of Namur (UNamur) and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL Lafayette). References to the Blanche de Namur and Louis XIV evoke the city’s history through its emblematic figures.

Heritage and emblematic landmarks

Namur is represented through its iconic monuments and landmarks: the Citadel with the Tour du Guetteur and the Walloon flag flying permanently above it, the cable car, the Belfry (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage), the Élysette, seat of the Walloon Government, recalling the role of Namur as the capital of Wallonia, the “Namur” lettering affirming the city’s identity, the Pont de Jambes decorated for the occasion (United States | state of Louisiana | City of Lafayette | Acadiana Region | Creole Community) (Belgium | Europe | City of Namur | KIKK Festival | Namur International Francophone Film Festival), and a Namourette, a symbol of river tourism.

Traditions and folklore

The major folkloric traditions of Namur are also highlighted: the stilt walkers (whose stilt-jousts are listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage), the Masuis et Cotelis Jambois group, the Alfers (those three groups have already represented the City of Namur in Lafayette), the 40 Molons and the emblematic saxophone. The Wallonia festivities, with its pèkèt, avisance, Houppe and Biétrumés, testify to the richness of local cultural and gastronomic traditions.

Innovation and citizenship

The NID (Smart and Sustainable Namur) symbolises civic engagement and collective reflection on the future of the city in the face of major contemporary challenges. The Pavillon also showcases the status of Namur as a UNESCO Creative City in the field of media arts, underlining the city’s cultural vitality.

A reference to the duty of remembrance is also present through the inclusion of a Liberty Road milestone, the final one of which is located in Bastogne.

Finally, a humorous wink seals this transatlantic friendship: a snail (Namur) shaking claws with a crawfish (Louisiana), a symbol of the warm and playful ties between the two cities.

About the artist:

Milan Cambier works as a freelance illustrator, mainly in the fields of communication and children’s books. Trained as a graphic designer, he gave himself the opportunity in 2021 to make a living from his passion and has since brought many projects to life: board games, educational materials, communication campaigns, and many others. His work seeks to create an emotional connection with the public through staging, lighting and characters. He draws his inspiration both from the richness of modern animation and from the minimalism of retro cartoons, while also tapping into the Franco-Belgian comic book, which is an artistic universe in which he has always been immersed. If his illustrations manage to make someone smile or dream, then he considers his goal achieved.
